Whatever your endeavour is, once the initial enthusiasm begins to wane, you are going to have to ask yourself some questions.
- Am I in this for the long haul?
- Am I willing to delay my gratification, and endure pain and resistance for years, perhaps even decades?
I consider this long term view to be one of the main differences to approaching your work as a professional, versus an amateur.
While the amateur (hare) races away from the start line with bold ambitions and an unrealistic timeline for making it to their chosen destination, the professional (tortoise) conserves his energy for the slog ahead.
If you are in the race, then the next thing to figure out is whether you should stay in it. More about that in another post, Knowing when to quit.
